Ivrit - Modern Foreign Language
At North West London Jewish Day School, Ivrit (Modern Hebrew) is our Modern Foreign Language. W ile the statutory requirement for Modern Foreign Language teaching applies to pupils in Years 3-6, we believe that introducing children to another language from an early age helps to develop their confidence, curiosity and enjoyment of language learning.
For this reason, every class, from Nursery through to Year 6, has a discrete Ivrit lesson each week. Lessons are carefully planned to develop pupils’ vocabulary and their skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, with children building on their knowledge as they progress through the school.
Ivrit is also an important part of wider school life and is naturally embedded within our Jewish Studies curriculum. Children encounter spoken and written Hebrew in a range of meaningful contexts, allowing them to make connections between their Ivrit learning, Jewish Studies and their cultural experiences.
Through this approach, we aim to give children a strong foundation in Ivrit, developing both their practical language skills and an appreciation of the language’s significance within Jewish life, culture and identity.
